London Gate
Within the walls of Londinum, Aldgate was the eastern most gateway leading to the city center and the only one ‘open to all’ (Ale-Gate), giving also the name to its surrounding district.
In light of the 2012 London Olympic Games, the project aims to reinforce the city’s link between its center and the Olympic park while regenerating the eastern area of Aldgate. The ‘London Gate’ will regenerate the City by reinventing the antique gate into a modern outlined ‘access’ for the public at High Street 2012, connecting the East of London and celebrating the Olympics.
Contrasting with the iconographic Olympic architecture, the simplicity of the project aims to rediscover the economic historical development of the city, highlighting its openness and ambition for change.
